Is Tech Training Critical For Teachers?
There are several factors to consider when deciding if teacher tech training is needed. These include teacher perceptions of the first-order barriers to technology integration and student perceptions of how the use of technology can benefit student learning. In addition, funding should be available for teacher professional development, including networked computers on each teacher’s desk. This will allow teachers to access software and other resources on their computers with ease.
Incentives for teacher tech training
Financial incentives are an effective way to attract and retain quality teachers in difficult-to-staff school districts. Such incentives help teachers advance their careers by ensuring that they receive ongoing professional development. They can also help schools reduce teacher turnover. However, financial incentives aren’t the only incentive that school districts should consider.
Some school districts are experimenting with new incentives to get teachers to embrace technology. In Bellingham, Massachusetts, for example, a school district is offering teachers a $500 grant to test various classroom software. Teachers must also conduct tests before and after using the software to collect data that helps the district choose the most effective programs. By 2009, all teachers in the Bellingham school district should have some training on educational technology. Using technology in the classroom is crucial for academic achievement, and studies show that teachers who see their computer monitor as an ally can improve student performance.
Incentives can also target a specific geographic location, subject matter, or classroom. Typically, they are tied to a locality, with high-need subject areas identified as priority areas. One way to ensure that the training program meets the needs of the community is to identify critical areas where teacher shortages exist.
Another way to improve teacher retention and improve student learning is to provide more professional development. For example, districts can offer additional incentives for teachers who are National Board Certified. These teachers are more likely to stay in the classroom and be successful.
Teachers’ perceptions of first-order barriers to technology integration
This study examined the factors that influence teachers’ decisions to integrate new technology in their teaching. Teachers’ attitudes toward the use of technology were one factor that influenced their decisions. However, the study also focused on the age of participants. Older teachers were more likely to avoid using technology or not to voice their opinion about it.
The research was conducted using qualitative methods. A focus group discussion was held, personal interviews were conducted, and field notes were taken. The first stage of the research involved the development of an instrument that included questions for focus group discussions and interviews. The focus group discussion questions were based on the research questions.
The study included twenty-five educators who took part in a focus group discussion and a personal interview.
